Skype which was acquired by Microsoft for $8.6 Billion has made an announcement related to its services in India on Monday (6/10/2014). Skype – One of the most preferable app for making national and international calls via Internet will no longer let you call Indian telephone numbers. “As of November 10, 2014, Skype will end support for calling within India meaning calls to mobiles and landlines from Skype within India will no longer be available.” This statement was given by Skype’s parent company, Microsoft during the announcement.
Microsoft further continued, “Users in India can still make free Skype-to-Skype calls worldwide, international calls to mobiles and landlines and users outside the country can call mobiles and landlines in India.” In India, Skype is used by many companies in the metropolitan cities of India to interact with their clients/colleagues all over the country but, henceforth they cannot.
The restriction which has been imposed by Skype may not affect a lot of businesses as Skype-to-Skype calls within the country and Skype-to phone calling abroad remains available. The Skype messenger facility will also remain available to users in India. Commercially this move wouldn’t affect most of Skype’s India revenue (or users) as best usage of Skype is seen for calling international phone numbers which is still working.
This news comes within a week after the launch of Lumia 730. The Lumia 730 positions itself as a phone fit for Skype calls and videos. Although there is no reason mentioned by Skype for discontinuing the facility, It can be assumed that the Union home ministry informed Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to restrict voice over internet as it conceals the caller’s information. VOIP has always been a tricky domain in India with plenty of regulations coming into play, cloud telephony players In India have also had their share of challenges with the regulators.
