Google Search Adapts to India's Slow Internet

In an attempt to address the concern of slow wireless connection of mobile internet users, Google has announced a streamlined version of search results, specifically for India.
This news comes a month after the release of the Android One series of mobile phones in India, which aims to revolutionize the Indian Smartphone market by providing affordable Smartphone’s to all. Google has taken another step in the direction of strengthening its position in India, by launching a lighter version of its search page which will optimize the results for Smartphone users with slow internet speeds. India is one of the fastest growing Internet economies in the world and most of this growth is driven by mobile, thus mobile Internet usage is a bigger priority In India than anywhere else in the globe.
Google Search India

Using a new streamlined version of its search page, the US-based company will identify slow connections and deliver the streamlined version of the search results.

“Increasingly, people in India are accessing the Internet through mobile devices such as their Smartphone’s. However, not all of these devices come with fast, cheap connections,” Google Software Engineer Bharat Mediratta said in a blog post.

Google’s new search will help people who do not have access to fast broadband connections, by providing them with quick efficient results. Google has achieved this by reducing the number of bytes required per search. The number of bytes in a search translates to the time required and the cost incurred to complete the search. Thus, Google’s efforts will lead to quicker and cheaper results.
The quality of Google’s results will remain the same, but elements such as images and maps will only show up if they are an essential part of the search. Customers with access to fast internet connections will get the complete search results with all the ancillary components. The algorithm which runs Google search decides if the streamlined version or the more expansive version is displayed.
Google has identified India and its fast growing internet base (currently at 200 million) as an important cornerstone, in its mission to organize the world’s information and make it accessible to everyone. Most of us using a 3G connection or WiFi may not appreciate this move by Google, but somewhere in a small town, people are thanking Google!
