Along with rumors that Apple is working on a CDMA version of the iPhone for Verizon in the US, here comes yet another news of the company being in talks with two Indian operators to offer a CDMA version of the iPhone in India.
The two companies involved in India are Reliance Communications and Tata Teleservices both of who have CDMA networks with a considerable user base in India.
According to the source, talks regarding this CDMA iPhone has been going on for the last five odd months.
Currently, Apple sells the previous generation iPhone 3GS in India on the Airtel and Vodafone networks in India. A CDMA version of the iPhoen sure makes sense in India because of the sheer volume of the Indian market.
That said, some analysts believe that it would be difficult ton generate revenues from a CDMA iPhone – considering the fact that the CDMA market is only 20% of the 670 million mobile subscribers in the country. Also, Apple hasn’t been able to make much inroads into India with its GSM iPhone.
The fact that Apple didn’t even account for 1% of the market share in India should be a testament to this fact
