Siri Port For Non-A5 devices, Is it Safe?

Since the launch of iPhone 4S we are all cribbing to have that robotic voice assistant Siri to do all our work. But the outrageous pricing of iPhone 4S and the design similarity to its predecessor has kept many away from going and outright purchasing the phone. After the launch of iOS 5, hackers have been figuring out ways of porting Siri to iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. And many alternatives have come up which let users to have Siri on their non-A5 devices.

The most famous ones are – Spire which is available under Bigg Boss repository and Siriport, available under Siriport.ru repo. For Siri to respond to queries it needs to access the Apple Servers and from there a reply comes back. Every iPhone 4s has an unique Identifying keys which lets it connect to the Apple Servers and get responses. So the hackers could’t really get the Identifier Keys and thus started running their own Proxy servers. And this is where the problem lies. A background on what a proxy server means will give you all a clear picture.

A proxy server is a server that acts as an intermediary for clients seeking resources from other servers. A proxy server may occasionally alter the client’s request and the server respone and  at times serve the request without contacting the specified server. In the latter case it ‘caches’ the response.

So this basically means that whenever a user is trying to access the proxy server, he/she is unknowingly giving out their critical credentials to the hacker. All your Mails, Contacts, Messages, Locations and any other personal data maybe exploited by the hacker who has access to the proxy server.

Are you willing to compromise your security to have this feature on your phone? Let’s know in the comment section.

The reason iPhonehelp.in is posting this article is to make every user aware of the risk involved when installing certificates from unknown Proxy servers. Many proxy servers are free and some are available for as low as 10$. This is very tempting but you should remember that your credentials and personal data are invaluable.
