iDongle: Hardware solution to solve the issue with your tethered jailbreak!!

Earlier this year Geohot had mentioned about a hardware solution, a kind of dongle for solving the tethered jailbreak issue. Now we have this dongle ready not from geohot but from a geek called Mribreakit!! from http://www.myboyfriendisageek.com
Now for people asking what exactly the issue with tethered jailbreak?? Its a jailbreak which holds good for just one boot and becomes unjailbroken and goes into “recovery mode” (i.e Connect-to-iTunes logo) when you reboot the device!! and you have jailbreak all over again!
Complete, full jailbreak in latest iDevices like the following are not achievable due to certain restrictions

  • iPhone 3Gs (made after week 40, 2009, week number is usually the 4th and 5th digit of the serial number)
  • iPod Touch 2G whose serial number begins with “MC”
  • all of iPod Touch 3G

So whoever has tethered jailbreak need to ensure that you just do not reboot the device all!! but this is not possible and there are instances where you have to reboot say after an important app update, battery drain out or say after a crash 🙁
So how to use this? Simple, just Power-on your jailbreaked device, On iTunes logo, plug iDongle, wait for leds to end flashing and Unplug iDongle or wait for boot!! and voila!! its done 🙂
As of now, iPhone 3GS and iPodTouch 2G/3G are supported, all with OS 3.1 / 3.1.1 / 3.1.2 only, but the later is recommended. OS 3.1.3 currently, is not supported.
Currently, only working prototype is available and Mribreakit says he needs to raise some minimal funds to start manufacturing them in quantities for public release. And unlock is not directly supported. One has to use Geohot’s “sn0w” or Dev Team’s “ultrasn0w” package on Cydia.
