The Motorola Atrix 4G was released just a couple of months back, and was the first mobile device to sport the nVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core processor. This device was greatly hyped before release – however, finally when it came down to CPU and GPU benchmarks, it fell behind the single-core Nexus S. As for the iPhone 4, it has been in the market for a long time now and had dominated the smartphone market in the initial stages of its release. It is still popular, but Android has taken over the lead in many forms. Let’s now delve in to our quick shoot out between the Atrix 4G and the iPhone 4
Look and Feel
The Motorola Atrix sure looks stylish with its curves, but it is plastic and very light. Many people do prefer light phones but I personally dislike plastic devices while on the other hand the iPhone 4 has a polish glass metal look and feel and when we hold it in our hands, it feels like we are holding something good, something costly. The iPhone 4 design is also very comfortable to hold and the square ends give the user perfect grip while holding in landscape mode and typing. So here we can say that the winner is personal choice as some people prefer thin and light weight devices.
Display
THe Atrix 4G comes with a 4″ qHD display specially engineered to have a better experience in watching HD quality videos and games with a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels while on the other side we have iPhone with its scratch resistant 3.5” retina display with a resolution of about 640 X 960. I was truly blown off by the retina display and the resolution of the iPhone it is really great to watch videos and play games on the iPhone but I prefer bigger screens so my choice would be to go for the 4” Motorola Atrix and the qHD display is not that bad compared to the iPhone, but again here personal choice is the winner some people prefer bigger screens while some prefer higher resolution screens / pixel density.
Hardware
This is the part where there is a huge difference between these two devices, the Atrix is the first device to be launched with nVIDIA’a tegra-2 chipset which has 1 GHz dual core ARM Cortex A9 processor with a ULP GeForce GPU while the iPhone 4 sports the A4 chipset designed by Apple themselves with a 1 GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor with a powerVR SGX535 GPU. The GPU on both these devices are very powerful though the GeForce is the latest and best in the market, but in CPU Atrix has a very powerful processor and the iPhone 4 cannot be seen anywhere near the latest dual-core processors. The Atrix has 1 GB of RAM which is very huge compared to iPhone 4’s 512 MB. Considering the camera both have a 5 MP primary camera and a VGA secondary one with LED flash, and also both of them support HD rcording (720p). Atrix will have support full HD support (1080p) when updated to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Coming down to the battery, Atrix has a 1930 mAh battery which is really massive compared to iPhone 4’s 1420 mAh but the iPhone 4 has a really good hardware software integration which increases its battery backup drastically. So here we can see that the clear winner is the Atrix. The Motorola Atrix 4G also houses a fingerprint scanner for the really geeky ones. Thats a rare tech on mobile.
Operating System
Well this part is really where everything comes down to and the fanboys have their choices but we will look into the facts. The Atrix runs on Andriod 2.2 Froyo while iPhone 4 runs on iOS 4.3.1 currently. Firstly I would like to say that both these OS are great and feature rich. iOS is known for its good quality applications and massive app collection in the App store while Android is known for its openness and customizations. Both of these devices now also feature WiFi hotspot.
The UI in iOS is very easy to use and simple to learn, anyone can easily get used to the iPhone in a very short time. iOS is also an eye candy the UI looks really polished and beautiful. In Android the UI is good but a bit complicated for first time users, but now with many people buying Android everyone is getting used to the Operating System. The best part of Android is that it allows widget of various applications on its home screen, live wallpapers and home screen customizations. Considering speed Android is faster than iOS because of its JIT Dalvik cache. Andriod also provides a better and faster web experience. Now considering applications iPhone has really polished and very good quality applications huge in number, in Android the quality of the applications are good but it is still lacking somewhere when compared to iOS but it is catching up at a very fast rate. The iPhone has registered about 350,000 + apps in its app store as per the beginning of the year and Android has registered about 310,000+ apps. So again the winner over here is personal choice.
The 4G Factor?
Apple launched the iPhone 4 for Verizom i.e the CDMA version of the phone in January. Thats when Tim Cook spoke about LTE. Apparently Apple didn’t want to make design compromise (thickening the iPhone?) by adding LTE and they wanted to bring the device to Verizon ASAP. It is likely that the next iPhone would support LTE / 4G, but for now it seems that iPad 2 and iPhone 4 don’t have any 4G love. This sure gives a number of Android handsets an edge, with 4G picking some pace. But how many countries have 4G active? How much depth? Pricing? Users have to pay an extra price to get 4G and the pro users surely want that extra speed. I am not sure about the impact on battery life or price difference, but iPhone 4 does lack a feature which is getting main stream. But Is 4G a deal breaker? Certainly not!
